Book:-Escape From Kabul

Author:-@enakshisg

When a city falls, courage becomes a form of resistance.

Escape From Kabul by Enakshi Sengupta is not merely a recounting of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021; it is a deeply human testimony of fear, resolve, and the quiet, stubborn courage of women determined to survive when history turns violently against them.

Five women, each from different countries, cultures, and personal histories, brought together by their work at the Anglo-American University of Kabul. When the Taliban reclaim the city, their professional identities—once symbols of progress and hope—suddenly become liabilities.

Sengupta places the reader squarely inside that terrifying pivot: one moment, life as usual; the next, a city collapsing into uncertainty, betrayal, and mortal danger.

Sengupta does not dramatize events unnecessarily; the horror lies in how ordinary the fear becomes. The furtive phone calls, the uncertainty of whom to trust, the constant calculation of risk—these are rendered with an understated intensity that feels authentic.

The prose is direct and unembellished, allowing the reality of the situation to speak for itself. The book’s emotional core is its portrayal of sisterhood under siege. These women are not idealized heroes; they are frightened, exhausted, and often unsure. Yet it is precisely this vulnerability that makes their solidarity so powerful.

The pacing mirrors the experience it describes—claustrophobic, tense, and relentlessly forward-moving. The escape itself, involving forged documents and perilous midnight movements through Taliban-controlled territory, is gripping without feeling sensationalized.

It confronts the reader with uncomfortable truths about global indifference, the fragility of progress, and the disproportionate burden borne by women in times of political upheaval. Yet it also offers something rare: a story that affirms the endurance of hope without romanticizing suffering.

In conclusion, Escape From Kabul is a searing, honest, and deeply human account of survival against overwhelming odds. It stays with you not because of its drama, but because of its sincerity. Sengupta gives voice to women who refuse to be erased - and in doing so, leaves readers with a renewed understanding of what courage looks like when the world closes in.

Must read♥️♥️
